From the Desk of Timothy D. Unruh, NAESCO Executive Director

The National Association of Energy Service Companies, NAESCO, is the national trade association that represents Energy Service Companies (ESCOs) and those who work with them - The ESCO Community. Together, our community is built around efficiency, sustainability, resiliency, and optimization.

In 2021, I see the opportunity to make the clear message that performance contracting is the solution to efficiency, sustainability, and cost reduction. Therefore, our 2021 theme will be called Partnering today for a more efficient tomorrow. Given that theme, performance contracting goes beyond efficiency, sustainability and cost reduction and is able to address infrastructure, resiliency, security, deferred maintenance, capital improvement, safety, and many more. In other words, I see the message is that performance contracting is THE solution - it is the solution to many types of issues. In 2020, we developed a proposal called “Build Back Better,” which also became a theme in the presidential election and in House and Senate bills. This theme carries the promise that any Federal dollars will be leveraged with energy efficiency – producing an infrastructure effort that will perform well beyond the Federal dollars committed. Our proposal is to match $4 in self-funded measures for every $1 in Federal funding to support resiliency add-ons. We will carry this theme into 2021 with the belief that ESCOs possess the experience and capability to prepare buildings for a future that requires resiliency, efficiency and indoor air quality.

As the national trade association of the ESCO Community, NAESCO provides support through:

  • Advocacy – finding pathways to make business happen, and to solve problems that arise
  • Engagement – actively involving ourselves in the energy community to encourage cost-effective solutions to infrastructure improvement
  • Training – providing workshops, webinars and conferences that will educate providers and users of energy services
  • Support – developing solutions to direct problems that arise on projects and issues our membership encounters

This year, we expect to restart our in-person events in the second half of the year, including our capstone event called “Renovate, Retrofit, Reduce” being held in November in Austin, Texas. We also plan several webinars and regional meetings.
